LADIES AND GENTS, THE RUNAWAYS
Hey people, Happy 2008, I’m back and ready to get the best of this year beginning with this, my first official shot of the runaways. This is a little sketch i did to let the editors know what is my approach to the kids, this may not be the final word on how they look, but hey, is the first one.
Honestly, I hope they keep his way, I like them, even the skrull girl.

Wow, these are awesome! I love the way you drew them in the little overview issue months back. Chase’s shirt just made me die laughing. I hope they stick with these designs too. Keep em coming!

Excellent!
I can’t wait for it to hit the stores!
January 10th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Looks great. I’m really looking forward to this.
January 10th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Looks pretty cool; can we assume a little more action packed story for your run?
by the way, just so you know on the book you’re working on, it’s Karolina, with an A at the end.
Seriously, can’t wait to see more!
January 10th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Esto hay que verlo en las páginas!
Ya estás tardando!
Nos vemos pronto.

I can’t wait!
January 10th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Less boobs, please. I’ve seen your art for years and you can do better than these spandex versions of Xavin (not “the skrull girl”) and Nico. Otherwise, welcome aboard.
January 10th, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Wonderful line-up. Hope they keep with this style too. Looks Great! I love their eyes, they really grab ahold of me.
January 10th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Hey Humberto,
I showed these image to my wife, who is a big runaways fan, and her only issue was that molly looked too young.
January 10th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
I like it, but Molly looks a bit too young and I never imagined Chase being that huge. Interested in seeing what you’ll do with the book, though!
January 10th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
did the runaways going back in time make them come back to a universe where nobody’s shoes or pants fit?
January 10th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Fantastic! I think the second-to-last-girl (next to Molly) may be the first comic character to wear Crocs!
Looking forward to more!
January 10th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
Hola, Humberto.
January 10th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
January 11th, 2008 at 2:59 am
Awsome designs. I Don’t suppose you could post a higher res version. I would like to try coloring it.
January 11th, 2008 at 3:21 am
January 11th, 2008 at 4:19 am
Didn’t like it, dude. At all.
Sorry about that.
January 11th, 2008 at 5:11 am
Is cool to know what you guys think, thank you for the comments good or bad I do honestly care about what you think and say, so a couple pointers:
Molly should be a little girl indeed, actually I think she was drawn older than she suppose to be.
About Case, he is the strong arm to the group, maybe you are right he is too big, that might change but I don’t know.
Clothing issue, this is just a lineup, the guys will have different outfits always, so you’ll see a lot of different styles on them, but honestly i love the Abercrombie and fitch style, sorry.
OK, Karolina will be, sorry for that.
Xavin, won’t be a girl skrull, editorial make a note on that already, that one will change completely.
most of my characters wear what i wear, and you know: I LOVE MY CROCS!!!!
JOE and VICTOR, resemblance, well now that you say it, let’s just remind ol’ poor JOE is been out of work for long time, is time to bring him back haha (sorry, bad joke)
January 11th, 2008 at 5:51 am
Some constructive feedback from a die-hard Runaways fan for you Humberto.
Molly is actually 13 or 14 by now, she should look considerably older. She looks 7-8 from what I’ve seen. But that’s been something all the Runaways teams have done, she acts and looks 8-ish but they say she’s 14.
Chase is a little bit on the huge side, but not too much - he’s just never really been portrayed as all that muscular.
I have no idea what Nico is wearing. Is she trying to be avril-lavigne skater punk, or gothic lolita? It looks like she’s trying to be both at the same time and it really doesn’t work as something a human might wear.
I like the rest so you’re not too far off. (Except her name is actually Karolina, with an A, not Karoline). Will save my final judgement till the first issue’s in my hand’s, with Christina’s gorgeous colors on top, but so far you seem to be on the right track.
January 11th, 2008 at 6:19 am
Awesome stuff Humberto.
Like all of your work it just can’t come out quick enough for me.
Any chance of you doing an interview on the podcast that Skottie Young is on, Around Comics?

January 11th, 2008 at 6:45 am
Molly looks WAY too young. She is 12, but she looks like she is 8 there.
(And I kinda like the crocs on Karolina >>)
January 11th, 2008 at 8:24 am
Hey, Man, this stuff looks great! Hope all is well with you.
January 11th, 2008 at 8:35 am
Yeah, I know Molly’s younger than the rest of the team, but only by a couple of years. Everyone’s around 16/17 now I think and Molly is 12/13. It’s great that you’re open to fan input though, it’s much appreciated.
January 11th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
I’ll admit the difference in style from what the book has been is a bit jarring, but I’m open to change.
They actually are pretty fun designs. The only real things I would recommend changing are, as already stated, making Molly look a bit older, and have Chase not quite so musclebound.
Of course, a sketch of the characters isn’t the same as the layouts, so I look forward to it either way.
January 11th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
I enjoy your designs a lot. I feel Nico’s outfit is a tad out of character. Have you considered making her shirt a little less form fitting and her skirt a little closer to the knee? I think the bow also distracts.
Besides that, I agree that Molly is a little too young looking. If you could make her a tad taller and narrow her face in I think that would help a lot. Right now her face seems to have a lot of baby fat that makes her look below ten whereas she’s always been shown to be 11/12
I love you Chase design and his tee, but he does seem a little bigger than usual.
Sorry, I really do like the designs and thanks for letting us see them and letting us comment. I’ll be gladly picking up your run.
January 11th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Excellent work. Absolutely love the stuff you did on Wolverine and X-men when Bachalo wasn’t around, so definitely excited for this.
January 11th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Molly is around 13! She was not drawn older than she is. I’m 14 (just turned it a few months ago), and 13 year olds do not look like that! 8 year olds, maybe. I think this is some of your best work, but please, please make Molly look older.
January 11th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
January 12th, 2008 at 12:08 am
Awesome characters!!!
January 12th, 2008 at 6:34 am
Hi. Victor looks white and not mulatto/Puerto Rican. Previous artists have given Victor a more mixed-race Puerto Rican look. Your Victor could easily be another raven-haired surfer dude.
One of my pet peeves with a lot of comics is that they usually portray white Latinos or white mestizos. Rarely, do we see brown mestizos, indigenous, black, or mulatto Latinos. It’s like watching telenovelas where all the Latinos could just as easily be right off the opera stages of Berlin.
And, one of the nice things about Xavin is that s/he was also brown.
January 12th, 2008 at 9:41 am
January 12th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Hola Ramos.
January 12th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Hola otra vez xD
Creo que estoy siendo demasiado pesado… -.-
Salu2
January 13th, 2008 at 5:37 am
Hola Humberto.
Gracias.
January 13th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Hola Humberto!
January 13th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Art is lovely, especially Chase and Karoline- not quite in line with previous depictions, but I think it fits their characters perfectly. Similarly Xavin, I know people complained she’s a bit barbie-ish but that seems pretty accurate considering her female form is designed by a teenage boy ;).
Only problem is the lolita fashions for Nico, they’re a little too OTT and don’t seem to fit with her personality (she seems more the angsty kind of goth) plus her facial expression makes her look really unhappy with them: she looks a bit like a fed up toddler being dressed up by her parents! That might just be the bow though….
January 14th, 2008 at 10:29 am
January 14th, 2008 at 11:44 am
Dude, I gotta say that I love Victor’s design.
But thats pretty much it.
All the others just don’t click. Especially Xavin, woah man! I think that thigh is wider than that waist! I know Xavin can shape shift his body, but that waist looks like its gonna snap under those boobs and head. I’m pretty okay with your Chase design, it’d be cool if his neck was thinner than his head, but maybe he’s on steroids or whatnot for the next arc? I “want” to like Karolina’s design, but I’m pretty certain that once you get rid of that top, she’ll have a pencil waist like Xavin and Nico. Also your OL doesn’t look like a dinosaur.
Molly and Nico… I’m sure other people commented on ‘em already.
January 14th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
Even Xavin? I hope you can infect Mr. Moore with your positivity, as I was quite disappointed with his unenthusiastic feelings about my second-favorite Runaways character. I would like to see Xavin continue to change genders as frequently as she has in the past (not counting the Civil War crossover).
I will be interested to see your first issue on Runaways proper.
January 14th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
My biggest issue is Nico. Goth, and Gothic Lolita aren’t the same thing. Give the girl a little modesty! She’s supposed to be an awkward teen, not a supermodel.
January 16th, 2008 at 1:21 am
Felicidades,
Saludos, F.
January 19th, 2008 at 4:31 am
January 20th, 2008 at 12:28 am
I’ve been so overwhelmed with your amazing Xmen and Wolverine work that my happiness has grown dependent on you. Keep droppin’ bombs, Mr. Ramos, please oh please oh please!!!
January 20th, 2008 at 2:12 am
Too much sexuality can cheese the book, but the style of the designs are perfect. Wholesome up the look of the girls perhaps (my biggest complaint with anyone’s Emma Frost is that she’s too naked at times) but other than that, I hope you don’t change a thing!
Spoiled on Xmen and Wolverine, I’ve had a lovely 2 years or so looking forward to these titles. My happiness is dependent on your work… please continue to deliver these explosive issues in your continuing work for Marvel.
January 20th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

January 24th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
January 28th, 2008 at 1:09 am
I’m really looking forward to your run on Runaways. I loved Chase’s shirt! Although your design for Molly is adorable, she definitely looks way too young for a 13/14 year-old hitting puberty in vol1. Your previous Molly design in the standing group shot is a way better depiction, posted at http://humbertoramos.com/blog/?p=41. I also prefer those older Nico designs, but that might just be because there’s more of your work there to like.
February 1st, 2008 at 11:44 pm
I can’t wait for it. The runaways is a perfect project for you (in my opinion). Damn it’s a fucking good newz ! =)
February 3rd, 2008 at 5:10 pm
saludos!
February 4th, 2008 at 1:36 am
Molly is way to young. We don’t want her cute, so much as funny. Please, Please, Please Don’t change her. She won’t be as funny that tiny, just goofy.
February 4th, 2008 at 4:31 am
Ah y muchas gracias por responder a mi otro mensaje! eres genial Humberto
February 9th, 2008 at 12:13 am
i am definitely loving it, my friend. Your art will really revitalize this title and bring a new depth to it. I loved the crossover short you did and really wished that you could do the Runaways title for a longer run. Fantastic!
February 11th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
I dont think your style fits western comics at all, you should be doing manga and nothing but manga.
February 14th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
You’ve become my favorite artist ever since I discovered your work on Peter Parker Spider-Man. What is your story to have gotten where you’re at today?
February 15th, 2008 at 2:46 am
Mr. Ramos,
Keep the Chase design, it’s growing on me and I’m beginning to think it kinda rocks. It’s not like you went over the top with him and made him superhero-pumped. We’ve been lead to believe he’s a jock and possibly was a former delinquent bully in his previous life, now he’s got the height and muscle to fit the cliche. He’s maybe beginner college football player-sized, just the right size. You also gotta consider that he’s getting older, I think his birthday was even mentioned within the story, so he might naturally fill out anyway.
Definitely have Nico dress better than that (I’m sure with a guy like Terry Moore writing the book, that’d get reigned in anyway).
I love your interpretation of Victor (ignore the crap about he and Xavin supposedly not having the right ethnic look or skin tone to them–it’s a black and white pic without shading and it’s preliminary people, come on).
Haven’t followed your work since Crimson years ago, looking forward to seeing where you and Moore take the kids during your run.
February 16th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Mr. Ramos,
I’d just like to finally let you know, I am seriously, one of your greatest fans. I was 12 or 13 when I went to my first convention and I saw the first three issues of Out There, ever since then I drop whatever cash I have on anything that you’ve done, I saw DV8 at this store the other day and grabbed it, just because.
I can seriously say I think you are the best artist to ever live, your style is amazing, I love drawing stuff you’ve done just for fun. It is the coolest ever. Everything you do is just, worshippable. I’ve horded your stuff since I could first visit a comic shop. I’m not all into it now, being in college and busy studying, but always mention your name whenever art’s brought up.
I hope you keep doin what you do best (And yeah I freaked out when you did civil war wolverine, I printed a poster size of the sketch without the color, and haha, It’s above my bed) for years to come. I really enjoy what you can do.
Best of everything,
Storm

Awesome! Just got my first copy of Runaways Saga! Lovin the lines!
April 7th, 2008 at 7:10 am
Everything I’d like to input has been said about your designs, Molly looking too young, Nico’s clothes look too goth princessy. To the person who says you should be doing manga should STFU, your grafitti/manga style i dunno what to call it is pretty slick yo. I think you’ll be a great fit on Runaways especially if you take some of the input from people’s comments. Just keep in mind this is the team that is supposed to break superhero molds ie an overweight heroine, no superhero names. GOOD LUCK I can’t wait to see it.
PS, you and skottie young should do something, that would be dope as hell.
June 7th, 2008 at 4:55 pm
I love where this is headed. show me more!
July 28th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Awesome as always. Sucks to hear about the Xavin mandate, but I guess that helps keep drama between him and Karoline.
August 1st, 2008 at 6:49 am
Umm.
I Like the old style of the Runaways more.
Sorry dude, but you make them look too American Manga styled.
Chase shouldnt be that big.
Molly looks waaaay to young.
Sorry I just dont like it.
August 12th, 2008 at 11:11 am
chase is WAY too big
…. i kinda liked it better when he was thin and normal looking… molly looks too young.. it makes me sad.
August 14th, 2008 at 5:29 am
You’ve come up with some nice, successful, fun designs. A little cartoony and less sketchy than the ones I’m used to.
They’re just… very different from the Runaways I’ve come to love. I’m sure I’ll get used to the change.
However, I will not get used to Molly’s design. She looks 6 or 7 in your sketch. She’s supposed to be twelve. She has hit puberty, you know. If anything, you should be making her a little taller, as that’s what happens with puberty. At any rate, she shouldn’t be looking so young. Please, please, please give her some height and make her head smaller/normal-size. She’d be in middle school had she not run off! Nico’s outfit is also out of character and Chase was never quite that built/big. His head shouldn’t be so small…
Love the Crocs on Karolina, though! Actually, I quite like Karolina’s design, in general. Probably my favorite. Molly’s hat is awesome, too.
If you show me that you can draw/understand the bones and muscles and beautiful curves of objects and people, if you show you know and use good line quality, if your exaggerations fit truthfully and honestly (like Egon Schiele’s did), all things the previous artists with this title have done, I’m sure I’ll love what you produce. If Molly’s fixed, too, I mean.
Sorry for the criticism. Just giving my honest opinion as a fan of the series. Looking forward to your work!
September 21st, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Oh wow I love the look of that sketch. I just can not wait to see the final draft though how cool. I like the tights that are black and white that the one chick is wearing, very fashionable! Nice post!
September 21st, 2008 at 6:24 pm
Also, the chick on the left I just love her outfit as much as the rest. Personally, I like how they look with a splash of american manga style although some of the others don’t. I say good job and keep it coming!
July 16th, 2010 at 1:54 am
I didn’t like your take on Chase… it is not bad, though, as he’s often refered to be a “jock”. I wonder what would have happened if you had drawn Gert =S
